I have to say that I find that Greek hospitality is a bit confusing to me and I don't think that it will always have a good ending.
Greek hospitality seems to be very welcoming to the visitors without asking questions. The hosts offer the best to the travelers and treat them very well. I feel that there are flaws here. While treating people nicely well give you a nice appearance and make people think more of you, one might run out of money or fall under the attack of enemies. It is stated many times that the guests get the best chair or the best cut of meat. Though one may be a ruler or really rich, at one point, if people start to take advantage of your hospitality, you may lose a lot of money. Of course, we cannot completely judge as times are different and, possibly, the Greeks were much better guests, but we cannot rule out this possibility as the suitors courting Penelope stayed at Odysseus’ house for a long time. Also, the hosts seem to not ask a lot of questions. Odysseus’ son did not ask Athena why she (or he as she was under disguise), was at his house. The only time there were questions asked was when Odysseus was seen wearing recognizable clothing. By opening your doors to any one, one’s enemies may come and kill you. This possibility is not completely outrageous as Odysseus had used a similar tactic to infiltrate Troy. In conclusion, Greek hospitality, in my opinion, is a bit strange and peculiar and may have a few flaws though we cannot completely judge them.
