Odysseus- not so bad after all?
I agree with Shang-Shang that Odysseus has led his troops to danger, but I also believe that all of Odysseus isn't as bad as we all have been making him seem. During discussion, many people said that Odysseus is a self-centered leader who has no intentions of helping or caring for his crew. I find this to be false because we see many examples of when Odysseus truly cares about his crew and tries his hardest to save them. In book 10 when Odysseus's men were cooped us as pigs in Circe's palace, Odysseus demands to Eurylochus, "Stay right here, eating, drinking, safe by the black ship. I must be off. Necessity drives me on" (10:300). There was nothing else motivating Odysseus to go into that place other than his need to save his crew members. Although he only thinks of himself at times, I believe he has good qualities and his crew definitely means a lot to him. Another thing that has been addressed about Odysseus is how he speaks too confidently and only cares about his self. Personally, I believe he has a cunning way of speaking and tricky plans that help him succeed in the many things he does. In book 9, when polyphemus asks Odysseus what his name is, Odysseus tells him that his name is "nobody." Due to this swift move, Polyphemus then yells, " nobody's killing me now by fraud and not by force" (9:455). Odysseus has a very crafty way of speaking, which is a vital part to a greek society. However, some of these ideas he has ultimately end up in disaster. Overall, Odysseus certainly has some good qualities that some of us haven't been seeing because we have been just focusing on his flaws. He was a fierce warrior in the Trojan war, defeated many people on the way home, and managed to escape the gods who are against him.
