While telling his story to the Phaeacians, Odysseus seems to try to make himself seem as good as possible, the way he tells his story makes him seam like the perfect man. After they got the winds and were almost home Odysseus went to bed and the crew opened the bag of winds causing them to get blow back. When Odysseus tell the story he refers to the crew as, "mutinous crew" (10.20-1). This makes it seem as it is all the crews fault, but you latter find out that for nine days Odysseus did not let the crew help him with the sails, then when he went two a deep sleep the crew opened the bag. Maybe if Odysseus had trusted the crew from the beginning they wound not of thought that in the bag was gold and silver.
Another example of this is when they get to the island of Circe. He want to scout the house of Circe but he does not want to risk it himself so instead he sends part of his crew. And they got turned into pigs. If he had gone the first time he would of been also turned into a pig. This would not have looked good for Odysseus, because then his crew would have had to save him. Making the crew better than Odysseus. Odysseus goes on to save the crew with the help hermes. If Odysseus had been captured it would have ruined his reputation, and the Phaeacians would not have looked up to him as much.
