Who is Odysseus?

I used to think highly of Odysseus, but now that I’m getting to know him more in the book he has been putting a sour taste in my mouth. In the beginning I expected him to be a modest and kind person. And he is, don’t get me wrong, but he also is very good at twisting things or saying things so that it benefits him. For example when he blatantly lied about Nausicaa it was just to please her parents, so that they would think highly of him. Another example is from what we read in book eight of the Odyssey; he boasted about himself and how good he is at sports, while throwing a few bad things in to make him seem great yet modest. I believe he is great, but extremely arrogant about it. Maybe I feel this way because I am starting to lose empathy for him. I mean his life isn’t really that bad now that he is going home and on the way receiving many gifts and wonderful treatment from people who even offer him help getting home. I understand that his life was horrible, but the times have changed. I just feel like considering fate and how strongly the Greeks believed in it, that he would be a more sincere and honest person, especially if it is believed that nothing you do during your life will change your fate in this world. Pretty much why are people liars or dishonest if they could live their life fine or even better without being that way? Odysseus is already a great person he shouldn’t have to change anything to make people think that about him.
