Telemachus needs to be a man

Many people have said that Telemachus needs to grow up and become a man. This is a very true statement. He is constantly babied throughout the book by Helen who is helping him on his journey to learn more about his father. Telemachus, who is 20 years old continues to act like a five year old not being able to stand up for himself but instead listens to Helen who is his mentor. Kasey who brought up the quote " you must not hold on to your boyhood any longer- it's time you were a man" (1:341), spoken by Helen says very frankly you need to grow up. In the story Helen is the mentor to Telemachus for his journey to find his father, but she seems to also try and help him be a man, a concept he does not seem to grasp. Telemachus cannot fend for himself or stand up for what he believes which is something he did not inherit from his dad. In chapter 3 when Nestor tells stories of Odysseus’s bravery and wit, it seems that he and Telemachus are not even related. He is a brave warrior and a fearless leader while is son cant stand on his own two feet without help. Seeing the great contrast between the two makes me wonder, would Odysseus be pleased to see what his son turned out to be or, would he think he shamed the family with his timidness?
