Poseidon's Role in Odysseus' Journey

Many people, when they are reading Greek Mythology, consider fate to be left up to the gods, like the many quotes in The Oddyssey such as "Now the gods have reversed our fortunes...", but they would be wrong. However, fate is actually out of the hands of the gods. The "Fates" (Wikipedia Fates) are three old women who choose when people die, they do this by cutting a person's string or "life". The women usually have their own agenda's and don't listen to any of the gods, and once they've cut someone's string there's no going back. Three days after birth the Fates appear in order to decide a child's fate, which is set in stone. Not even Zeus, the king of the gods, let alone Poseidon, being a very powerful god in his own, cannot change the Fates decision and thus cannot kill Odysseus before the prearranged time determined by the Fates. Poseidon can merely be a nuisance in order to slow down Odysseus and send him off track, but death is out of his hands. This is shown by Poseidon not killing Odysseus but rather, as I said before, just providing a nuisance and slowing Odysseus' already arduos journey, "And now for his blinded son the earthquake god - though he won't quite kill Odysseus - drives him far off course from native land." This shows that Poseidon won't, or can't, kill Odysseus even though his son is blinded because of the hero.
