To Believe Or Not To Believe?
In the Odyssey, the Gods and Goddesses play an important role. They are part of everything and everyone. Odysseus prays to them, and believes in them so much, that he is always looking for help from them. However, in O Brother Where Art Thou?, Ulysses the main character does not seem to believe, or want to believe in God. Where as for Ulysses's friends, Delmar and Pete, they look and pray to God for help a lot in the movie. In my earlier post about O Brother Where Art Thou? I mentioned how Penelope in The Odyssey is different from the wife of Ulysses. Now I would like to talk about how Ulysses is different from Odysseus, that Odysseus believed in the Gods and Goddesses and Ulysses does not. Towards the end of the movie, Ulysses is about to be hung with Delmar and Pete, so Ulysses gets down on his knees and prays to God in asking for forgiveness. As this happens a wave of water comes through and saves them all. As Ulysses, Delmar and Pete are floating in, what is now a lake, on a piece of wood, Delmar and Pete comment on how they saw Ulysses praying to God. But, Ulysses being the stubborn he is, claims it was because of the heat of the moment, but in reality we know he is lying and does not want to admit it. Over all the differences in the movie and book are vast, but sometimes you may not always see them.
